If you have never eaten a sugar apple before, you are in for a treat!
Sugar apple, also known as sweetsop or Annona squamosa, is one of our favorite tropical fruits here at Jessie’s Tropical Fruit Farm. The fruit has a unique appearance with its knobby green skin, but inside is soft, creamy, fragrant flesh with a naturally sweet flavor.
In our latest video, we show you exactly how to eat a sugar apple and get to all of that delicious fruit inside. Watch here –
What Does Sugar Apple Taste Like?
Sugar apple has a wonderfully sweet, creamy texture that is often compared to custard. Depending on the variety and ripeness, you may notice flavors reminiscent of vanilla, banana, pineapple, pear, or even tropical berries.
The texture is soft and almost creamy when the fruit is fully ripe.
One of the most important things to know about sugar apple is that it contains quite a few seeds. The easiest way to enjoy it is to separate the soft fruit from the seeds as you eat it.
The seeds should not be eaten.
How to Eat a Sugar Apple
Eating a ripe sugar apple is actually very simple.
First, allow the fruit to ripen until it has a little bit of softness when gently pressed. The skin will usually become slightly less firm as the fruit ripens.
Once it is ripe:
- Wash the outside of the fruit.
- Break or cut the sugar apple open.
- Pull apart the sections to expose the creamy flesh.
- Eat the flesh around the seeds.
- Remove and discard the seeds as you go.
You can eat the fruit straight from the skin, or scoop the pulp out and remove the seeds before using it in recipes.
And don’t worry if it takes a little practice. Sugar apple is one of those fruits where you quickly learn the best way to enjoy it!
